The Pill for Men
I'd read about the idea of a male birth control pill on a theoretical level a few months back, but apparently it's moving out of theory into reality. Skipping over the "It's About Damn Time" section and the "Yeah, Messing With Hormones Sucks, Women Have Been Dealing With That Since Before You Were Born, Get Over It" section, I'm really more interested in the "Would American Men Go For It" section.
Are guys panicked enough about the possibility of accidentally making babies to take this pill? I have no idea, mostly because I'm not a guy and because my own experiences with the pill were not good - though very effective. The urge to vomit nicely counters any sexual feelings, thus elimating the risk of pregnancy altogether. On top of that, my boobs didn't get bigger. I was seriously bummed. I don't know if the male pill would have any weird side effects for men, this article mostly emphasized that sexual performance wouldn't suffer. I quote:
Um, yeah. Yet another reason for comprehensive sex ed. Although, I know that Matt Israel and Joel took a nap when the Human Sex professor talked about the pill. Joel I can understand (he payed rapt attention during the three day lecture on homosexuality), but I would have thought Matt would have been more interested, as he [censored]. You can lead a horse to water...
Do guys even think about what would happen if they got some girl pregnant? I do know of a few guys who have, but they aren't sexually active. Interesting... I suppose it's sort of related to the fact that women do ultimately have more control in the event of an unintentional baby. It's nice to think of it as a group decision and a group responsibility, but I don't really think it is. It might be your baby too, but you can't make me get rid of it any more than you can make me carry it to term. And if I do carry it to term, I can make you pay child support. Be-yotch.
My conclusion? If I had a son, I'd pay for that prescription. But, my sons will also be getting the "Be Careful Where You Stick That Thing" lecture. My children will be educated and totally grossed out.

there were hardly any worries about a social stigma attached to a near-zero sperm count as long as, of course, their sexual performance remained the same (it does). Much more of a red-alert priority was health: All were eager for more information on the mysterious side-effects hormones might have. Few were aware that women including their girlfriends had been dealing with this issue for years: "I'm amazed women let themselves get talked into this!" was a response heard several times.

I'll applaud the straight men who do take it. Honestly, I think it's going to lead to a rise in STDs. Men will convince women that it's still safe because he's on the pill and she won't get knocked up, when they should really be wearing a condom in addition to taking the pill.
